Original Hand-Printed Limited Edition Screenprints Anna Harley is a Bristol-based printmaker with a Master’s degree in Multi-Disciplinary Printmaking from UWE Bristol. For the past eighteen years, she has worked from Spike Print Studio, across the Floating Harbour. The fabric textures that feature throughout her prints reflect both her Arts and Crafts background and her Swedish ancestry.
This exhibition of flower prints is inspired by the work of Harley’s Swedish great-aunt, Maja Fjæstad, an acclaimed textile designer and printmaker. Fjæstad’s belief that original art should be accessible to everyone first drew Harley to printmaking and continues to influence her practice today.
Each print is produced by hand using a traditional screenprinting process. Drawings and fabric textures are separated into layers and printed individually onto acid-free paper, with each colour carefully mixed and registered by hand. Every print is part of a limited edition and is signed and numbered by the artist.
Several of the flower prints in this exhibition feature in the film My Mother’s Wedding, directed by Kristin Scott Thomas and starring Scarlett Johansson, Emily Beecham and Sienna Miller. Harley was also commissioned to create printed textiles and cushions for the production, which inspired a continuing collection of hand-printed textiles.
Her work has been exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair and Mall Galleries, London, and is held in collections across the UK. More recently, she was commissioned to create the permanent artwork for the Princess Royal Bristol Surgical Centre at Southmead Hospital.
